NORFOLK Va. – Old Dominion University’s Dr. Ron Moses  has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Committee on Academics, a prestigious group that sets rules and regulations for Division I student-athletes.

Moses is ODU’s executive senior associate athletic director for internal operations and student-athlete welfare. He oversees all academic advising for ODU student-athletes, NCAA compliance and student-athlete welfare, including mental health and diversity, equity and inclusion.

He also heads alumni relations with former student athletes and is the senior administrator for ODU baseball.

He joins a committee that sets rules and regulations for APR scores and graduation success rates and also overseas requests for NCAA waivers for student-athletes.

He said given the coming changes in college athletics “it is good for Old Dominion to have a seat at the table."

The NCAA has settled a $2.8 billion lawsuit, called the House Settlement, that will require all Division I schools to begin paying former student-athletes for their name, image and likeness. More than 14,000 student athletes are to begin receiving a portion of that money for 10 years beginning in 2026-27.

NCAA rules were changing rapidly even before the settlement. The NCAA allows current players to receive NIL money and each athlete has the right to transfer to another school at the end of every season. Those changes have resulted in thousands of student athletes transferring to other schools.

Dr. Moses said that amongst all of the changes, not much attention has been paid to how the frequent transfers will affect athletes student getting an education and a college degree

“This is a pivotal year between the House settlement and all of the other coming changes,” Dr. Moses said. “While all this has been happening, not a lot of people have been talking about academics, and that’s why student athletes go to college in the first place.

“How do we uphold academic standards? How do we make sure they still get developed as young people? We want to make sure the educational mission stands in the midst of everything else going on.

“I hope we can help give some guidance in those areas.”

Moses, who came to ODU in 2019, will serve on the committee for four years. Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, the president of Norfolk State, also serves on the committee.

The committee consists of university presidents, faculty athletics representatives; directors of athletics; senior women administrators; conference administrators and a student-athlete.

Moses graduated from the University of Georgia as an undergraduate, earned a Master’s degree at Western Kentucky and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He is also a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the National Guard.
