Hamden, Conn. - The Old Dominion Field Hockey team found a winner in overtime from Emily Tammaro to defeat Quinnipiac 2-1. The win brings ODU to a 10-5 overall record, 5-1 in BIG EAST conference play, and secures the team a spot in the conference tournament.

“Any conference win is a good one, and especially an away win that secures our spot in the conference tournament,” said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths.

The Bobcats got off the board first, scoring four minutes into the third quarter from a Lucia Donati shot that was assisted by Lauren Keyte. The Monarchs answered back quickly, finding the back of the net on a penalty corner from freshman Amelie Zielcke at 10:24. Both Nicolette Saccomandi and Frederique Zandbergen were credited with an assist on the goal. A scoreless fourth quarter brought overtime. Emily Tammaro smashed the winning goal into the net from an assist by Sanci Molkenboer at 4:57 of the first overtime period to make the final score 2-1.

“I’m proud of the team for sticking with it, even when Quinnipiac was playing hard and making it difficult to score. Their GK played very well and the ball just wasn’t bouncing our way,” Griffiths added.

ODU generated 19 shots, 15 shots on goal, and seven penalty corners. Zandbergen’s assist in today’s game brought her career tally to 53, tying Dana Sensing for 10th all time at Old Dominion University.

“In the first half we were not sharp enough, and we didn’t create enough clear chances. The second half we made some simple changes and completely dominated. We created a lot of dangerous opportunities and just couldn’t get the final bounce going our way despite plenty of shots,” said Griffiths.

ODU’s defense held Quinnipiac to three shots, three shots on target, and four penalty corners.

“So, I felt it was a matter of time until we scored, and Emily finally finished an emphatic smash in overtime. We took care of business today and are looking forward to celebrating our seniors tomorrow and Sunday.” Griffiths added.

Suus Broers played the entire game in goal for the Monarchs, recording two saves.

Cristina Torres played the full game in goal for the Bobcats, recording 12 saves.

ODU will next be in action on senior night this Sunday, October 27 when they take on App State in Norfolk at the LR Hill Sports Complex at noon.
