Old Dominion Battles Villanova and #1 North Carolina This Weekend

The Old Dominion Field Hockey team will battle Villanova in BIG EAST Conference play Friday, 3 p.m. The Wildcats will travel to Norfolk to take on the Monarchs. ODU will travel to North Carolina to battle the #1 team in the nation UNC on Sunday, 1 p.m.

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion Field Hockey team will battle Villanova in BIG EAST Conference play Friday, 3 p.m. The Wildcats will travel to Norfolk to take on the Monarchs. ODU will travel to North Carolina to battle the #1 team  in the nation UNC on Sunday, 1 p.m.

Last time out against Villanova on October 13, 2023, both teams combined for 11 goals. Old Dominion came out the winner 6-5 with Sanci Molkenboer finding the back of the net twice, Emily Tammarro scored from a penalty corner.

In the last meeting against North Carolina on September 10, 2023, ODU lost 2-1. The Tar Heels scored the first two goals of the game from Paityn Wirth and Charly Bruder. Frerderique Zandbergen cut into the deficit with ten minutes remaining but the Monarchs were unable to tie the game back up.

Both games will have live stats. The game against Villanova will be streamed on ODUSports.com and the game against North Carolina will be streamed on ACCNX.

ABOUT ODU: 

Old Dominion (8-4) is coming off back-to-back wins against Georgetown (5-0) and James Madison (3-2). Sian Emslie was awarded BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, recording three goals including a game winner in overtime against JMU. Serena Langendoen was named BIG Defensive Player of the week, scoring goals in back-to-back wins for the Monarchs.

Tess Jedeloo and Frederique Zandbergen are tied for the lead in total points with 22. Zandbergen leads ODU in assists with 14 this season, Jedeloo leads ODU in goals with 10. Emslie ranks third with 20 points from nine goals and two assists. Langendoen is the team’s third leading goal scorer this season with seven goals.

Old Dominion ranks first in the BIG EAST in goals allowed (13), goals off penalty corners (16), and total penalty corners (117). ODU also ranks second in goals scored (40), goals scored per game (3.33), scoring margin (2.52), and scoring average (3.74).

Suus Broers has started all 13 games in goal, logging 669 minutes and recording 31 saves. She ranks first in the BIG EAST with a 1.22 goals against average.

ABOUT VILLANOVA:

The Wildcats (7-6) are looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to #19 Liberty. Villanova is led by Sabine de Ruijter with 26 points from 12 goals and two assists. Ranking second on the team is Meghan Mitchell with 16 points from six goals and four assists.

Maddie Sears has started all 13 games in goal, logging 744 minutes and recording 41 saves.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA:

The #1 Tar Heels (10-0) are undefeated this season, most recently defeating App State 5-0. North Carolina will be in action Friday, October 18, against Wake Forest, before heading to Norfolk to battle the Monarchs. North Carolina is led by Charly Bruder with 28 points, 13 goals, and two assists. Ranking second is Ryleigh Heck with 27 points, seven goals, 13 assists.

Abigail Taylor has started all 10 games in goal, logging 522 minutes and recording 21 saves.
