LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team completed a sweep of its three matches at the Liberty Dual Tournament this weekend in Lynchburg to claim the tournament title.
Cosme Rolland De Ravel went 3-0 in singles and in doubles over the event to take home MVP honors.
“What a great first weekend beyond the results,” said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. “Our guys came together as a group and our new guys could see what it takes to be successful in college tennis. We got better as a program this weekend.”
The event opened up with a match against the host Flames on Friday as ODU took a 4-3 victory. In doubles, the Monarchs claimed the team point with wins at the top two spots. Rolland de Ravel and Adam Majchrzak scored a 6-4 win at the top spot, while Yanis Moundir and Thomas Nelson won 6-2 at number two.
In singles, ODU won the first three spots to take the match. Rolland de Ravel was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at number one, while Aryan Saleh won 6-2, 7-6 at number two. Freshman JK Olivier De Sardan won 6-3, 6-1 at number three. Liberty finished 2024 ranked 56th nationally, while ODU was 54th.
On Saturday, they faced off against Princeton who was ranked 36th at the end of last season and took another 4-3 win.
Like Friday, ODU took the doubles point with wins at the top two spots both by 6-4 scores. In singles, Rolland de Ravel won 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 at number one. Majchrzak took a 6-3, 6-4 win at number four and Nelson scored a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at number five as ODU advanced to the finals.
ODU faced off against Elon on Sunday morning and scored a 6-1 win in the title match. The Monarchs scored the doubles point winning all three matches. Rolland de Ravel and Majchrzak won 6-1 at number one, Moundir and Nelson took a 6-2 win at number two, while Saleh and Olivier De Sardan won 6-3 at number three.
In singles, the Monarchs got wins by Rolland de Ravel (5-7, 7-5, 6-3) at number one, Olivier De Sardan (4-2, ret.) at number three, Majchrzak (6-1, 6-0) at number four and Nelson (6-2, 7-5) at number five.
ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Connor van Schalkwyk and Codie van Schalkwyk competed in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma this week.
In doubles, the brothers went 1-2 winning a 6-4, 6-4 consolation round of 16 matchup against Ondrej Horak/Karim Al-Amin of MTSU 6-4, 6-4. In singles, both went 0-2 in their brackets.
ODU will be back in action on October 10-14 hosting the ITA Atlantic Regional at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
