Norfolk, Va. - ODU Field Hockey fell on Sunday to the Ohio State Buckeyes by a final score of 2-1. Old Dominion scored late in the fourth quarter but could not find a second goal to force the game to overtime.

The fixture was back and forth between the two teams until a goal from Lindsey Roberts put the Buckeyes ahead with a little under a minute left to play in the third quarter. Makenna Webster scored the second for the Buckeyes eight minutes into the fourth quarter to space out their lead. Frederique Zandbergen scored off a penalty corner which was assisted by Sanci Molkenboer and Serena Langendoen with three minutes remaining. The final minutes were tight but Ohio State take the victory, with a final score of 2-1.

ODU Field Hockey had five shots, four on target. Both teams finished the game with four penalty corners.

Suus Broers played the majority of the match in goal, up until being pulled to create an attacking edge on a penalty corner. She registered six saves having faced 12 shots from OSU attackers.

During halftime a moment was taken to announce the Maaike Hilbrand ODU Field Hockey Fundraising Campaign, honoring her legacy at Old Dominion University. The 3x National Champion was a legendary figure at ODU, being tied for 1st All Time for goals (167) and 2nd All Time in career points (372). We are honored to celebrate her life as an athlete and as a person by symbolizing this recognition in her name.

Coach Griffiths provided the following quote after the match

“Well that was a game and an opportunity we let slip. We were in control for much of the game. We created plenty of dangerous attacks but we had difficulty finding the last pass to finish our chances.”

“In the first half, we were not playing our best hockey and we still had the better of the game. We were more connected in the second half, but couldn’t make it pay when we needed to. And Ohio State took their chances, credit to them.”

“So in general we are doing a lot of good things in our play. And there is no question the team is working hard and playing tough, I’m proud of them for that. the key for us going forward will be effectiveness in the attacking end of the field.”

ODU field hockey will next be in action on Friday, September 20, where they will face off against Liberty in Norfolk at 3 p.m.
