Hempstead, N.Y. - Old Dominion dispatched Hofstra by a score of 3-0 en route to a second consecutive win to begin the season. Goals by Frederique Zandbergen and Sian Emslie were the difference in a game where the Monarchs had 19 shots, 13 on target, and the majority of possession in the opposing team’s side of the field.
ODU (2-0) got off to a fast start but could not find the net in the first quarter, through the first 25 minutes of play the Monarchs accumulated six corners but could not convert. However, with a little under five minutes to play in the first half Zandbergen scored from a transition opportunity in which she muscled past the Hofstra defense, firing into the back of the net. Her first goal of the season gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Sian Emslie was able to capitalize on an opportunity to score her first goal of the season, and as a Monarch. Old Dominion maintained that offensive pressure up to the end of the half, forcing two saves from Hofstra goalie Pieke Roos to deny the Monarchs a third goal before the break.
Early in the second half, Emslie was able to find the back of the net again for her second goal of the season. The Monarchs had scored three goals in 13 minutes of play, a barrage of offense that Hofstra could not bounce back from.
The rest of the game from that point on was a job of seeing it to the final whistle. Old Dominion maintained possession during this time and a superb defensive effort did not allow the opposing team a single shot until the fourth quarter. Serena Langendoen played a full 60 minutes in defense and recorded four shots, two on goal.
Suus Broers received the win in 45 minutes of action with Elsa Goldsberry finishing out the fourth and recording two saves to secure the shutout.
Head Coach Andrew Griffiths provided the following quote after the victory:
“We moved the ball very well today all across the field and created a lot of chances. The Hofstra goalkeeper played great and we had a lot of opportunities early but couldn’t convert. It took a really special goal from Freddy to get us on the board.”
“It was a spectacular goal. She turned and beat her player inside our half and just took off, ran 40 yards with Hofstra players chasing her - she didn’t break stride and hit a laser into the far corner.”
“That was a special moment, but overall it was a strong team performance again. We created a lot and defended well. We have plenty to improve and work on, but it was a promising start for us this weekend. We took care of business with two shutouts and involved a lot of new players into the performances.”
ODU is now 2-0 on the season and will next be in action on September 6, where they will face off against Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina at noon.
