NORFOLK, Va. -- The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced their 2023-24 Scholar Athlete awards on Thursday and six Monarchs were recognized for their work in the classroom.
Old Dominion had Sydnee Blackburn, Lucy Brennan, Maddie Enns, Ellen Gortz, Haven Habhab and Bekah Kimman earn the honor from the CRCA. A total of 770 student-athletes from 72 schools were recognized in NCAA Division I.
“I’m truly proud of the work our athletes put in on the water and off the water. Having six athletes recognized for their work in both areas is awesome. I think the one area awards like this miss is that each of these athletes are good people too and want our team to be as successful as possible,” said ODU Head Coach Brian Conley.
To qualify, an athlete must meet both academic and athletic requirements, such as being in at least their second year of eligibility and maintaining an average cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Additionally, student-athletes must have rowed in their institution’s NCAA eligible boats for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or race in an NCAA Boat at their Conference Championship/NCAA Championship.
