NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion baseball's midweek game at the University of Richmond has been canceled due to inclement weather expected in Tuesday’s forecast. The game against the Spiders will not be made up.
The Monarchs (27-23, 13-14 Sun Belt) closed the chapter on Bud Metheny Ballpark with an 11-10 extra-inning victory over App State on Sunday as Steven Meier (2-for-5) belted a walkoff solo home run to right field to lead off the bottom of the 12th. It marked the second time this season the junior outfielder walked off an opponent after he hit a solo home run to secure a 6-5 win over then-No. 11 East Carolina on Feb. 27. Maverick Stallings (2-for-3) homered twice in the game with a grand slam in the second and a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to finish with 6 RBIs on the day. Vincent Bashara made his first start of the season and set a new career high in innings pitched as he shut out the Sun Belt’s top hitting ball club for five frames.
ODU is currently tied for seventh in the Sun Belt standings with Coastal Carolina and South Alabama and will close out the regular season this Thursday through Saturday at Georgia State. The Panthers (24-28, 11-15) dropped their series opener to Coastal 17-13 on Saturday, but won the first game of a Sunday doubleheader 10-9 before falling to the Chanticleers 17-7 in the second game of the twin bill. GSU is also trying to lock in a seed for next week’s Sun Belt Championship and is currently tied for 10th in the standings alongside Texas State.
Only 10 of the league’s 14 teams will make it the tournament with the top six seeds securing a spot in the double-elimination bracket. Seeds seven through 10 will play a pair of single-elimination games next Tuesday. The 2024 Sun Belt Championship will be held on May 21-26 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. Each game will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Championship title game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET start on Sunday, May 26.
