NORFOLK, Va. – The 50th-ranked Old Dominion men's tennis team is back on the road for a pair of matchups this weekend against a former Conference USA rival and then a conference match.
They'll step back into non-conference play on Friday with a matchup at former conference rival Charlotte at 2 p.m. Following that match they'll head to Conway, South Carolina to face Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. Sunday.
"Another challenging road weekend upcoming. It's great to get a little break from conference play against a quality team in Charlotte. After that, Coastal Carolina is starting to peak at the right time and playing great tennis," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
ABOUT ODU
ODU (15-5, 5-1) is coming off a pair of 4-0 home victories last week defeating 74th-ranked Louisiana and Southern Miss. Connor van Schalkwyk leads in spring singles wins with a 15-2 record, while Yanis Moundir is 14-1 and Cosme Rolland de Ravel is 11-3. In doubles, the tandem of Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Moundir sport a 9-5 record and the duo of Jakob Cadonau and Rolland de Ravel are 8-1.
Against Charlotte, the Monarchs hold a 6-1 advantage in the series having won the last meeting on Feb. 23, 2023 by a 6-1 count in Norfolk. The matchup with Coastal Carolina will be the second all-time matchup as ODU won 6-1 last year on April 9.
ABOUT CHARLOTTE
The 49ers enter the match with a 12-7 match with a match at Elon on Thursday before hosting the Monarchs. Charlotte last faced 51st-ranked Rice and fell 4-3 on March 31. ODU and Charlotte faced each other six times as members of Conference USA and ODU won five of those meetings.
Coy Simon leads the team in singles with a 19-7 record, followed by Vasco Prata (18-7), Matias Iturbe (17-12) and Spencer Gray (16-10). In doubles, Iturbe and Ivan Dreycopp lead with a 9-5 record, while Prata and Iturbe are 7-1.
ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers split action last weekend at home defeating Georgia State (4-1) on March 29 and falling to league leading Georgia Southern (4-3) on March 30. They'll host James Madison on Saturday before the Monarchs come to town.
In singles, Guilherme Toresan and Lucas Wayenburg lead with seven wins, while Carlos Berna Ruiz, Juan Cruz Collardin and Maj Tomac follow with six wins each. In doubles, Wayenburg and Berna Ruiz lead with a 9-4 mark, while Tomac and Toresan are 5-3.
