DALLAS – Old Dominion baseball senior left-handed pitcher Jacob Gomez has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's 19th annual Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List, as announced by the NCBWA on Wednesday.
A Rutherford, New Jersey native, Gomez is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA through 11 appearances and one start for the Monarchs this season. He is tied for the national lead in multi-inning saves (7) and is also 12th in the country in total saves (7). Gomez has allowed seven runs on 21 hits and six walks while recording a team-high 42 strikeouts through 34.1 innings pitched. He's also holding opposing batters to a .178 batting average against him.
The list includes 59 of the top relief pitchers in all of NCAA Division I baseball, with 20 different conferences represented. The SEC has the most representation with 11 relievers on the list, followed by the Sun Belt with six and the Big West and Pac-12 with five each. Other SBC relievers joining Gomez on the watch list include James Madison's Joe Vogatsky, Louisiana's Matthew Holzhammer and LP Langevin, South Alabama's Grant Wood and Troy's Noah Manning.
The NCBWA will announce the finalist for the award on Wednesday, June 5 with the winner revealed on Friday, June 14 at the 2024 College World Series.
