NORFOLK, Va. – The 69th-ranked Old Dominion women's tennis team opened a home weekend of Sun Belt Conference play with a 6-1 win over Texas State inside at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
 
"Strong performance from our entire squad today. I'm happy with our continued growth as a team. It was great to have Kira back out there. Kudos to her and the athletic training staff for a quick and focused recovery process," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
 
In doubles, the Monarchs dropped the opening game at each spot but roared back to claim the team point. Alexandra Viktorovitch and Ulyana Romanova won 6-1 at No. 2 over Jadeh Chan and Mae McCutcheon. Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Sofia Fortuno and Maria Lora.
 
Singles saw the Monarchs get rolling as Johnson scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kiana Graham at No. 1 and Rasskouskaia took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrea Pineda at No. 5 for a 3-0 lead.
 
Viktorovitch clinched the win at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Emily Niers to lead 4-0. Romanova immediately followed with a 6-4 ,6-1 win at No. 6 over Lora to push the lead to 5-0.
 
Kira Matushkina, returning to action after missing last couple weeks with mononucleosis, took the ODU lead to 6-0 after a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fortuno at No. 4. Allison Isaacs trailed 4-1 in the second set after losing the opener 6-4 and put on a comeback taking the next five games to even the match at No. 2 with a 6-4 tally. The third-set tiebreaker saw Callie Creath pull away late for a 10-7 win.
 
ODU (7-5, 3-0) is back in action on Sunday morning with Louisiana at 10 a.m.
