NEW ORLEANS – Following a 2-0 week for Old Dominion women's basketball, senior guard En'Dya Buford has been voted the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Buford led the Monarchs (20-7, 11-5 in Sun Belt) in scoring with 42 points (21.0 ppg) and helped clinch wins over Appalachian State and Georgia State. She shot 14-for-23 (.609) from the floor, went 6-for-10 (.600) from beyond the arc, and made 8-of-12 (.667) shots at the free-throw line. On Thursday against the Mountaineers, she finished with 17 points while shooting 5-for-11 from the field and added two rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block to help ODU to an 81-62 win.
On Saturday at Georgia State, she set a new career high of 25 points while shooting 9-for-12 from the field, 3-for-5 from distance, and 4-for-6 at the charity stripe. Buford also grabbed nine rebounds with three assists and three steals. ODU led by only five points at halftime and the Panthers used a late third quarter run to trail 54-47 early in the fourth quarter. That's when Buford scored five straight points to open up an 11-0 response that solidified the win for the Monarchs.
Her effort last week also helped ODU reach 20 wins for the third-straight season.
This marks Buford's first career weekly honor. She is the second Monarch to earn the award this month after Jordan McLaughlin was selected Sun Belt Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 13.
ODU has a pair of home games this week as the Monarchs host Georgia Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Marshall this Friday at 6:30 p.m. in what will be the team's Senior Night and final regular season game of the season.
