NEW ORLEANS – Old Dominion baseball's Hunter Fitz-Gerald has been named the Sun Belt Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

A JUCO transfer from Florida Southwestern State College, Fitz-Gerald hit .444 (12-for-27) with an .889 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base percentage this past week. He homered three times, doubled three times, and added eight runs, 11 RBIs, 24 total bases and one walk to his totals. The effort helped the Monarchs (7-1) go 5-0 with wins over VMI, William & Mary and a series sweep of Fordham.

Fitz-Gerald hit safely in all five games and recorded multiple hits in four of the five. The Margate, Florida native finished 5-for-6 with one homer, one double, four runs and four RBIs in a midweek win over the Keydets last Tuesday. He then doubled and drew a walk in a 2-for-4 outing at W&M on Wednesday.

In this past weekend's series against the Rams, he doubled and drove in a run to finish 1-for-5 in Friday's series opener. Inclement weather turned Sunday into a doubleheader, and Fitz-Gerald started off the day batting 2-for-5 with one long ball, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored as ODU claimed Game One, 11-3. For the second game of the twin billing, he finished 2-for-7 with another big fly, a double, three RBIs and two runs. That helped ODU to a 19-1 final and secure the team's first series sweep of the season.

Fitz-Gerald entered the week batting .214 and raised his average to a .366 clip. He currently ranks second in the Sun Belt in doubles (4), hits (15) and runs (11) and is also third in the league in hits per game (1.88) and total bases (28).

The Monarchs will see the Tribe for the second time in as many weeks on Wednesday as ODU hosts W&M for a 3 p.m. game at Bud Metheny Ballpark.
