BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern used a 13-4 spurt over the final 3:36 to hold off a wild Old Dominion comeback for an 81-68 win on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
Vasean Allette scored a season high 21 points, while Chaunce Jenkins added 12 points and Tyrone Williams had his third double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for ODU (3-4).
In a first half that saw six ties and nine lead changes, ODU started off fast on an Allette 3-ball from the corner for the first points. ODU pushed the advantage to 14-7 as Jenkins found Bryce Baker for a 3-ball to take a 14-7 lead at the 13:50 mark.
Northeastern closed the half scoring the last five points as Luka Sakota drained a triple and a pair of free throws from Harold Woods gave the hosts a 40-33 lead at intermission.
The second half saw Northeastern jump out scoring the first six points as Sakota had four free throws in a 13 second span to push the lead to 46-33 with 17:28 left.
Old Dominion cut the deficit to four points after a Jenkins free throw for a 68-64 count with 3:36 left. From there, the hosts went 6-of-6 from the line to help close it out.
On the night, Old Dominion was 4-of-9 from the foul line, while Northeastern was 40-of-51. ODU was 29-of-60 from the floor (48.3%) and held Northeastern to 18-of-43 (41.9%).
Sakota paced Northeastern in scoring with 18 points going 11-of-12 from the line. Masai Troutman added 14 going 6-of-8 from the line and Harold Woods also had 14 going 10-of-11 from the line.
Old Dominion will head to William & Mary for a 7:00 p.m. tip on Wednesday night before hosting James Madison on December 9 for a Whiteout.
