NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University Football linebacker Jason Henderson has been named a Bednarik Award semifinalist, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.

The Bednarik Award is given to the best defensive player in the country.

Henderson leads the country with 154 tackles and is second in the country with 18 tackles for loss. He has double-digit tackles in all 10 games this season and in 22 of his last 23 games.

A native of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, Henderson has earned the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. Two weeks ago against Coastal Carolina, Henderson tied his own school record with 22 tackles. The 22 tackles are tied for the most by an FBS player so far this season.

Already ODU's all-time leading tackler, Henderson is tied for third in the FBS among active players with 420 tackles.

Henderson's 154 tackles lead the country by 33 over Jay Higgins of Iowa. Henderson is trying to become the first player to lead the country in tackles in back-to-back years since Luke Kuechly of Boston College did it in 2010-11. Last year, Henderson led the country with 186 tackles, seven shy of tying the FBS record held by Lawrence Flugence of Texas Tech.
