BOONE, N.C. – Old Dominion volleyball dropped its Sun Belt series opener at App State in straight sets on Thursday night at the Holmes Convocation Center.
The loss drops the Monarchs to 10-15 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Bailey Burgess converted her attack to knot the opening set at 5-5, but the Mountaineers (13-9, 4-7) earned four of the next five points to pull ahead 9-6. A couple of service aces helped the hosts create some separation at 15-9, and App State scored six unanswered to put the set out of reach at 21-10. The Mountaineers grabbed the set by a final score of 25-12 for the early match lead.
Teresa Atilano served back-to-back aces to give ODU an early 3-2 advantage in the second set. App State took back the lead at 4-3, but ODU responded with a 4-0 run as Myah Conway scored a pair of kills, Elisa Maggi served an ace, and Conway and LeeAnne Lowery recorded a block. The Monarchs were up 11-9 later in the set, but the Mountaineers put together a 6-2 run to go up, 16-13. After trading points multiple times, App State strung together four-straight points to close out the set, 25-19.
Four kills from Conway helped put ODU in front 6-4 in the third set. However, App State used a pair of 5-0 runs to build a 17-9 lead. The Monarchs were unable to recover, and the Mountaineers earned the victory with a 25-16 decision.
Conway finished with 11 kills and Burgess scored seven kills to lead ODU's attack. Atilano collected 24 assists with two aces, two blocks and five digs. Conway and Maggi served one ace each, Bryanna Jones had four digs, and Conway, Burgess and Kate Kilpatrick ended up with three digs each.

The teams return to the Holmes Convocation Center tomorrow for the second match of their Sun Belt East Division series. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
