NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion volleyball has a couple of road matches at App State this Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26-27. Both contests in the Sun Belt series are scheduled for 6 p.m. starts at App State's Holmes Convocation Center.
Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will also be available.
Series History
ODU and App State have met three times, with the Monarchs leading 2-1 in the all-time series. ODU claimed the first meeting 3-1 on Sept. 3, 2021 at the Black & Gold Challenge in Boone. Myah Conway led the way with 13 kills, Hailey Duncan and Alessia Sgherza followed with 10 kills each, and the Monarchs combined for 14 blocks.
ODU then hosted App State on Oct. 28-29 last season and split the Sun Belt series versus the Mountaineers. The Monarchs won the first match in straight sets as Ashley Peroe scored 13 kills while hitting .440 on the night and the team combined for 10 blocks. After a 25-13 decision in the first set, ODU edged the visitors 29-27 in Set Two and 26-24 in Set Three to seal the victory. The next day saw App State respond with a 3-1 decision as Teresa Atilano recorded a 26-assist, 12-dig double-double.
About ODU
The Monarchs (10-14, 2-8 Sun Belt) hosted Louisiana last Thursday and Friday and opened the conference series with a 3-1 win. After taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-19, ODU came up short in the third set, 25-20. Down 8-7 in the fourth, a Tessa Mati kill opened up a 6-0 run and the Monarchs held on for a 25-18 tally. Conway hit .333 for the match with a team-high 20 kills and LeeAnne Lowery set new career highs of 11 kills, 10 blocks and 16.5 points.
ODU then suffered a 3-1 setback on Friday. Conway led the team in the loss with 16 kills, Atilano finished with 32 assists and two aces, and Lowery made six blocks.
Heading into this week's series, Conway is first in the Sun Belt and 10th nationally with 354 total kills. She's also the league leader and ranked 11th in the country with 403.5 points and is second in the conference with 850 attacks. Atilano is second in the Sun Belt in both service aces (36) and total assists (855), and Alice Munari follows Conway in kills with 164. Defensively, Kate Kilpatrick and Atilano lead ODU's back row with 279 and 215 digs, respectively. At the net, Bailey Burgess has recorded 83 blocks (19 solo), Lowery is second on the team with 77, and Conway is third with 73.
Through matches played on Oct. 24, the Monarchs rank first in the league and 12th nationally with 220 blocks this season. ODU is also third in the Sun Belt in both team assists (1,050) and team kills (1,120) and is listed at 164 in the most recent RPI rankings.
About App State
The Mountaineers (12-9, 3-7) made the trip to Marshall last week, falling to the Herd in straight sets on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. Down two sets to none in the second match, App State stayed alive with a 25-20 decision in the third set and a 25-19 victory in the fourth. Marshall was in control of the deciding set 6-5 and strung together five unanswered points to pull away, holding on for a 15-10 tally.
McCall Denny leads the App State attack with 217 kills, Lulu Ambrose is next with 197 and Maya Winterhoff is third with 171. Setters Katie Cruise and Sophie Cain have combined for 761 assists. At the service line, Kenady Roper is up to 26 aces and Cruise and Alyssa McBean have served 24 aces each. Defensively, Roper owns a team-high 324 digs and Denny has 233. Winterhoff leads the effort at the net and ranks 22nd in the country with 102 blocks this season, 21 of them solo. She's also the Sun Belt leader in hitting percentage with a .375 clip.
As a team, the Mountaineers rank third in the conference in blocks per set (2.48), opponent hitting percentage (.173) and team total blocks (201). App State enters the series listed at No. 181 in the latest RPI rankings.
