Volleyball Concludes Road Trip With 3-1 Loss at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Old Dominion volleyball claimed a 25-22 decision in the second set, but dropped the next two as Coastal Carolina handed the Monarchs a 3-1 setback on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.

With the opening set knotted at 5-5, an Elisa Maggi kill and an ace from Myah Conway put the Monarchs (9-13, 1-7 Sun Belt) in front of the Chanticleers (13-7, 8-0). The home team earned the next point, but ODU added to its lead with back-to-back kills by Conway and Tessa Mati. CCU then pulled ahead 18-15, but a Teresa Atilano kill, a Bailey Burgess ace and a Coastal attack error knotted the set at 19-19. The teams then exchanged points the rest of the way with the Chants coming out ahead, 25-23.

In the second set, ODU found itself behind 18-15 and later 20-17. Atilano then assisted LeeAnne Lowery to open up a 5-0 run that put the Monarchs on top, 22-20. A pair of late kills by Maggi then evened the match with a 25-22 tally in favor of ODU.

The Monarchs held a 6-4 advantage early in the third set, but the Chants then took over with a 11-1 push. ODU strung together four-straight points to get back to within 19-16, but came up short 25-21.

ODU dug itself an 8-3 hole towards the start of the fourth set and later trailed by as much as 11 points, 19-8 and again at 20-9. Kills from Conway and Mati, coupled with a pair of CCU attack errors, narrowed the gap 22-16. However, the Chants secured the next three points to bring the match to an end.

Maggi recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 17 kills and 14 digs. Conway also reached double figures with 14 kills, Mati was next with eight kills, Atilano put up 44 assists with 13 digs, and Conway and Burgess served two aces each. On defense, Lowery and Atilano made six and five blocks respectively while Kate Kilpatrick led the back row with 15 digs.

Saturday's match had 26 ties, half of them in the second set, and 11 lead changes.

The Monarchs will be back in Norfolk next week when they host Louisiana on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts.
