NEW ORLEANS – After placing second at last weekend's Evie Odom Invitational, Puneet Bajwa has been named the Sun Belt Women's Golfer of the Week the conference office announced on Thursday afternoon. It marks her first career weekly honor.
The freshman from Mohali, India shot par or better in all three rounds of the Monarchs' home tournament, which was held at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach on Oct. 6-8. Bajwa was tied for 13th with an even 70 following last Friday's opening round. She then carded a two-under 68 on Saturday to move into a tie for third and closed out the Invite with a three-under 67 for her final trip around the course. Her 54-hole total of five-under 205 was just two strokes back of the individual medalist, Makenzie Cooper of Chattanooga, and edged the third-place finisher, Kent State's Leon Takagi, by one stroke.
Bajwa made five birdies in the first round and four in each of the next two rounds to finish with 13 for the tournament. She was second in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.50 and was also tied for third with a 3.83 par-4 average. Her effort helped the Monarchs secure their first Top 5 finish of the season as the team combined for an 866 (+26).
Bajwa and the Monarchs will round out their fall slate at The Ally, hosted by Mississippi State at Old Waverly Golf Club on Oct. 23-25.
