Men's Tennis Opens Fall With Strong Showing At NYCC Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team opened their 2023 fall schedule this weekend hosting the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club Collegiate Invitational with a solid showing.
 
In singles, ODU's Codie van Schalkwyk went 3-0 on the weekend and was declared the singles champion. Doubles saw the duo of Satchel Benn and Oliver Hague of William & Mary declared the champion also going 3-0.
 
"First of all thanks to the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, all the housing families, sponsors, and all the people that made this event possible. We could feel the support and hospitality all weekend despite the rainy weather. We received a lot of positive feedback and are looking forward to making this an annual tournament for our local tennis community to enjoy," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
 
Van Schalkwyk scored a pair of straight set wins over Virginia Tech and James Madison. On Sunday, after dropping the first set against William & Mary he won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to finish 3-0. Aryan Saleh also went 3-0 with wins over College of Charleston, James Madison and William & Mary. Yanis Moundir was 2-1 on the event with wins over Virginia Tech, James Madison and a tough three-set loss on Sunday to William & Mary. In doubles, the Monarchs got a win on Sunday over William & Mary.
 
"From a competitive standpoint, I was really pleased with our singles performances. We worked a lot on conditioning and developing our 'ODU Men's Tennis DNA' for the first month of practice and I think we were able to show that this weekend," said Mueller. "Our guys should take positive feedback out of this that our work is translating in positive results. We did not work too much on doubles yet this semester and that also showed, but we have lots of good doubles skills on the team and will work on that more closely before our next competition."
 
ODU is back in action over the weekend of October 6-8 at the River City Open in Richmond.
