NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig announced on Tuesday a contract extension for women's basketball head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones. The new extension will run through the 2027-28 season.
"DeLisha Milton-Jones is a phenomenal leader of young women," said Dr. Selig. "She is an exceptional role model. DeLisha has been a champion at every level – college, pro and Olympics. I can't think of anyone better suited in this day and time to lead our storied ODU women's basketball program than DeLisha Milton-Jones. I look forward to having her lead us well into the future as she continues to lead ODU women's basketball back to national prominence."
During her three seasons at ODU, the Monarchs have compiled a 59-33 (.641) overall record with a 31-21 (.596) mark in league play. During that time, her teams have reached the conference tournament semifinals twice (Conference USA in 2021 and Sun Belt in 2023) as well as making it to the second round of the WNIT in 2022.
"It is a wonderful feeling knowing that my vision is supported and my work is appreciated. I thank Dr. Wood Selig for believing in me while on my quest to bring back the historical prominence of this program," said Milton-Jones.
In 2020-21, Milton-Jones' first year leading the program, ODU finished 13-11 and 7-9 in C-USA as Victoria Morris and Amari Young placed on the All-C-USA Second Team and Young secured a spot on the C-USA All-Defensive Team. Additionally, Young and Wayne were voted Second Team All-State by VaSID and Wayne also played her way onto the C-USA All-Tournament Team.
In her second season in 2021-22, the Monarchs finished the year 24-10 and 12-6 in conference play. The team secured wins over Power 5 opponents Auburn and Texas Tech and picked up a road win at Towson in the opening round of the WNIT. Iggy Allen and Wayne earned First Team All-C-USA honors and Allen was also a First Team All-VaSID selection.
ODU went 22-12 with a 12-6 mark against league opponents this past season. The Monarchs reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship, falling to eventual champion and top seed James Madison, 70-64. Young represented ODU on the All-Sun Belt Second Team as well as the All-Tournament Team. Milton-Jones' 2022-23 squad posted the best home record in the conference at 13-2 and landed on CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25 poll four times throughout the season, ranking as high as No. 18.
"Having the appreciation of your efforts displayed through a contract extension is the reward many coaches hope to obtain," continued Milton-Jones. "I'm grateful to be able to continue my journey as the head coach for Old Dominion women's basketball."
