DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Old Dominion men's golf team took fifth place following the final round of the 2023 River Run Collegiate on Tuesday in Davidson, North Carolina. Davidson hosted the two-day tournament at River Run Country Club.
As a team, the Monarchs recorded rounds of 288 and 279 on Monday. ODU then recorded a 283 in the final round on Tuesday to finish with a 10-over par total of 850. Radford won the tournament with a six-under 834, East Carolina placed second with a one-under 839, and Delaware and Davidson both carded four-over 844s to tie for third. ECU's Carter Busse was the individual champion at 10-under 200, while Radford's Bryce Corbett shot a seven-under 203 and was the runner-up.
"We had some very good scores and some very inconsistent scoring," said head coach Murray Rudisill. "Overall, a fifth-place finish was not bad for our first event. We were 13th last year in the same tournament with about the same good field. Jakob Chicoyne played very well for an eighth-place finish, and Kazuki Yamauchi and Kaijun Ma both had solid tournaments."
Chicoyne was the top finisher for the Monarchs, tying for eighth with a 54-hole total of 209 (-1). The Calgary, Alberta native turned in an even 70 in the opening round and carded a four-under 66 on the final day. Ma tied for 17th at 213 (+3) and Yamauchi tied for 32nd at 218 (+8). Jakob Henriksson and Aleksander Bjorge rounded out ODU's lineup, tying for 44th and 48th with final totals of 221 and 222, respectively.
Ma fired a 67 in the second round, Bjorge also had a solid second round of 66, and Yamauchi posted a 69 for his final 18 holes. Bjorge recorded the team's lone eagle, Chicoyne made a team-high 13 birdies, Ma followed with 10 birdies, and Yamauchi led the Monarchs with 38 pars.
Up next for the team is the Ironwood Classic, which will be hosted by ECU on Oct. 2-3 at Ironwood Golf and Country Club.
