NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Field Hockey team opens its season at home on Sunday, Aug. 27 at noon when they take on the Delaware Blue Hens at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
The Monarchs return 15 players from last season BIG EAST Regular Season Championship Squad including BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, Marlon de Bruijne, second team All-BIG EAST selection Frederique Zandbergen and Nicole Fredricks who was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST squad this year. ODU added four transfers in Anna Miller (Saint Joseph's), Danielle Husar (Virginia), Sam Zywna (Maryland) and Elsa Goldsberry (New Hampshire). Old Dominion comes into the first week of the year ranked #18 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Polls.
The Monarchs return three of its top four scorers from last season in de Bruijne, Zandbergen and Aubrey Mytych and kept the defense strong by adding Miller to the back with Fredricks and sophomore Emily Tammaro.
Delaware is coming off a loss to VCU on Friday 4-3 in Richmond. Julia Duffhuis was the leading scorer last season for the Blue Hens and scored her first goal of the year against the Rams, adding an assist.
Last season the Monarchs defeated Delaware in Newark, 5-1 behind de Bruijne's hat trick. ODU leads the all-time series 14-4-1.
