PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Old Dominion Football linebacker Jason Henderson was named to his third watch list for a national award this preseason. Henderson was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List given to the outstanding defensive player in college football, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both offense and defense.
Earlier this month Henderson earned Nagurski (Defensive Player of the Year) and Butkus Award (Top Linebacker) Watch Lists accolades.
In 2022 Henderson led the country with 186 tackles, the third most in a single season in FBS history. He led the country in 20+ tackle games and had double-digit tackles in 11 games. His 186 tackles broke ODU and Sun Belt Conference single-season records.
For his career Henderson has 264 tackles, which is fifth most in ODU history.
Henderson and the Monarchs open the 2023 slate at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 2 and host Louisiana in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 9.
