NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women's basketball senior forward Amari Young has been named to the All-State Second Team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced on Tuesday.
A native of North Augusta, South Carolina, Young was the top scorer and rebounder for the Monarchs this season with 381 points (11.9 ppg) and 268 rebounds (8.4 rpg). She shot .465 from the field and .564 at the free-throw line while adding 40 assists, 63 steals and 15 blocks to her season totals. Young started all 32 of the games she appeared in, scored in double figures 22 times, and recorded nine double-doubles. She was named to the Sun Belt's All-Conference Second Team as well as to the All-Tournament Team after helping the Monarchs reach the conference championship semifinals.
Young finished the 2022-23 campaign ranked second in the Sun Belt in total rebounds and steals and was third in rebounds per game. She eclipsed 1,000 career rebounds this year and finishes her time at ODU ranked fifth on the program's all-time leading rebounders list with 1,164 for her career. Her 1,575 career points place her 13th on the Monarchs' all-time leading scorers list.
Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley was named the 2023 VaSID Player of the Year as well as the Defensive Player of the Year while Hokies head coach Kenny Brooks was selected Coach of the Year. Rookie of the Year honors went to Radford's Ashlyn Traylor.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
