ELON, N.C. – The Old Dominion Women's Lacrosse team defeated Elon 12-11 on Saturday, February 11. This marks the first win for head coach Theresa Walton at ODU. Danielle Dundas, Lilly Siskind, Sydney Taylor, and Haley O'Connor all scored two goals for the Monarchs.
Payton Kisling would break an 11-11 tie when she took the pass from O'Connor to put ODU up 12-11 with just five minutes left in the game. Kisling's goal proved to be enough as the Monarchs would take home the win.
The first quarter was a scoring frenzy for both teams as they combined for 10 goals. Dundas gave the Monarchs are quick 2-0 lead, her first goal came just 34 seconds into the game and her second came 36 seconds later. Elon would then score three unanswered goals on free positions. Taylor would even the game up at 3-3 before Callie Culhane assisted Kisling to give ODU the lead with just under six minutes left in the first quarter. Elon's Kaley Ehnow would score to tie it up with just over three minutes left. ODU would respond with two goals of their own, Jayme Weber would score her first career goal as a Monarch and Siskind would follow up Weber's goal to give the Monarchs a 6-4 lead at the end of the first.
Both teams would adjust going into the second quarter as only four goals were scored. Elon would get on the board first when Bridgit Kelley converted a free position attempt. ODU would answer as Siskind found Caroline Shaefer to give the Monarchs a 7-5 lead. Cierra Hopson would score two more goals for the Phoenix to make it 7-7 at the half.
Cierra Hopson would start the third quarter for Elon with another goal, the Phoenix were a man up as Sammy Fisher would score 20 seconds after Hopson's goal extending the lead to 9-7. O'Connor would cut the lead in half as she scored her first goal of the season with just over 12 minutes left in the third quarter. 10 minutes later Taylor would score her second goal of the game and tie it at nine. Thirty seconds later O'Connor would convert a free position attempt to give the Monarchs a 10-9 lead. The lead last only 30 seconds as Elon's Bridgit Kelley would score just before the end of the third quarter.
Elon broke the 10-10 tie just one minute and 15 seconds into the fourth quarter. With just under seven and a half minutes remaining the captain Siskind delivered a strike into the back of the net to tie the game.
Old Dominion is back in action Wednesday, February 15 when they travel to VCU for a game starting at 1 p.m.
