NEW ORLEANS – Old Dominion linebacker Jason Henderson was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Henderson recorded a school-record tying 18 tackles in the season-opening win over Virginia Tech. He also recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and had two pass breakups, including a deflection on Ryan Henry's interception that led to Blake Watson's game-winning touchdown.
A native of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, Henderson made six tackles in the first half and added 12 more in the second half. He tied TJ Ricks' school record of 18 that was set against Charlotte in 2015.
Henderson is the first Monarch to win a Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor.
Old Dominion is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 at East Carolina at 6 p.m.
