NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion baseball head coach Chris Finwood announced the complete schedule for the upcoming 2023 season on Monday. This spring will see the Monarchs play 56 games during the regular season, to include 31 games at home and a May 9 meeting with East Carolina at Harbor Park.
"We're excited about our 2023 schedule," said Finwood. "As always we have a challenging non-conference schedule with games versus NCAA tournament teams in UVA, ECU, VCU and Liberty. Also adding former C-USA partner Charlotte for a non-conference series should help us prepare for Sun Belt conference play."
The Monarchs eclipsed 40 wins for the second straight year last season, finishing 41-17 overall with a 19-11 mark in league play. ODU earned the third seed for the 2022 C-USA Tournament and was one game shy of reaching the championship final, falling 8-7 to eventual champion Louisiana Tech.
ODU opens its 2023 campaign at home as the Monarchs host St. John's for three games at the Bud on Feb. 17-19. The Monarchs also host non-conference series against Fordham (Feb. 24-26) and St. Joseph's (March 3-5), while making a trip to Charlotte for three games on March 10-12.
ODU also has several home-and-home series on its docket. ODU's first midweek tilt of the year will see the Monarchs at home against VMI on Feb. 21, and the teams will later meet again in Lexington, Virginia on April 19. The Monarchs play at William & Mary on Feb. 22 and host the Tribe on March 1. Liberty visits the Bud on March 22 and will later host the Monarchs on May 3. ODU will play at VCU on April 25 and host the Rams on May 16. Finally, the Monarchs will travel to Greenville, North Carolina on April 11 to play East Carolina and will later see the Pirates again for the May 9 game at Harbor Park. It will mark the eighth time ODU has played a game there.
The first couple of months also features midweek home games against Norfolk State (March 7) and Princeton (March 14-15) and a road game at UVA on March 28.
The Monarchs open conference play at ULM on March 17-19. ODU is then back on its home field the following weekend against Marshall (March 24-26). Other home series in Sun Belt play include Southern Miss (April 6-8), Coastal Carolina (April 14-16), Texas State (April 28-30), and Georgia State (May 18-20). ODU's other conference road trips include playing at Georgia Southern (March 30-April 2), App State (April 21-23), Arkansas State (May 5-7) and James Madison (May 12-14).
"We certainly recognize how good a league the Sun Belt is in baseball, and we're excited about the new challenges we will be facing this year," continued Finwood. "We have NCAA tournament teams Southern Mississippi, Coastal Carolina and Texas State at home and travel to another NCAA tournament team in Georgia Southern as well. We play a large number of home games as well as 19 games against teams that reached the postseason last year."
The Sun Belt Championship is slated for May 23-28 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. Riverwalk Stadium is the home of the Tampa Bay Rays AA affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits.
