NORFOLK, Va. – The 2022-23 Old Dominion men's basketball season tips off on Monday night at home as the Monarchs host the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore inside Chartway Arena at 7 p.m.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried live on ESPN Radio 94.1FM with the pre-game show at 6:30 pm.
ODU (13-19 in 2021-22) was preseason picked ninth in the Sun Belt and will enter the 2022-23 season with a new look of seven new faces on the roster. Leading the returning crew is junior Mekhi Long who averaged 8.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, was second in blocked shots last year (25) and was tops in steals (52).
Returners include: Charles Smith IV, Imo Essien, Jadin Johnson, D'Angelo Stines, P.J. Gill and Jason Wade.
New faces joining this season are Ben Stanley (Xavier), Tyreek Scott-Grayson (Northeastern), Tre Brown (Drexel), Chaunce Jenkins (Wichita State), Dericko Williams (Tallahassee CC), Faizon Fields (Chipola), along with freshmen Bryce Baker and Cooper Jones.
This will be the 12th meeting between the schools with ODU winning the previous 11. Last time they met was in the 2019-20 season with ODU claiming a 76-52 decision.
Maryland Eastern Shore finished 11-16 in 2021-22 with Zion Styles the leading returning scorer after averaging 10 points and four rebounds per game. Kevon Voyles (9.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg) and Da'Shawn Phillip (9.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg) followed Styles in scoring last season. Nathaniel Pollard, Jr. is the leading returning rebounder after averaging 6.6 per game to go with 8.7 points per contest.
The Monarchs will be on the road after this contest with a trip to Philadelphia to take on former CAA rival Drexel on Friday night at 7 p.m.
