NORFOLK, Va. – Following a thrilling penalty kick shootout win over defending champion South Alabama on Friday night, the Old Dominion women's soccer team will meet in-state rival James Madison for the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship on Sunday.
The match will be at 2 p.m. ET and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Old Dominion (8-8-3) comes in after playing South Alabama to a scoreless draw through 110 minutes and winning 4-3 in penalty kicks. Emily Bredek made five saves heading into penalties for her third clean sheet of the season. In the penalties, Riley Kennett, Yuliia Khrystiuk and Cami Johnstone made theirs early as it was tied 3-3 after six rounds. South Alabama hit the post on its seventh attempt and Ece Turkoglu blasted one into the upper right corner to advance the Monarchs.
Carla Morich leads ODU in scoring with five goals and one assist for 11 points, while Megan Watts has four goals and two assists for 10 points. In the net, Bredek has a 0.63 goals against average and a 0.844 save percentage.
James Madison (12-3-5) comes into the match after a 1-0 double overtime win over Georgia State Friday night. Lidia Nduka stuffed in a rebound shot at 103:45 for the lone tally in the contest. JMU is topped in scoring by Amanda Attanasi with eight goals and three assists for 19 points, while Nduka follows her with six goals and four assists for 16 points. In goal, Alexandra Blom has started 17 matches with a 0.41 goals against average and 0.903 save percentage.
In the regular season, these teams met and Attanasi scored at 85:59 to give JMU a 1-0 victory on September 22.
This will also be the first meeting since the announcement of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge. The series is a year-long contest, where points are awarded for head-to-head competition or for the best finish in mutual conference championship events in sports where head-to-head competition does not occur. Half points are granted in case of a tie. Both regular season and postseason matches are included in head-to-head calculations.
Additional points for academic achievements and competitions will also be part of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge. At the end of each school year, the school that earns the most points will hoist the Royal Rivalry Trophy which is currently being designed by students in both schools' art departments.
