ATLANTA, Ga. -- A Carla Morich goal off a feed from Riley Kennett in the 15th minute proved to be the lone tally on Sunday afternoon as Old Dominion held off Georgia State 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference East Division women's soccer action.
Old Dominion (6-8-2, 4-4-1) held commanding advantages in shots (17-5) and shots on goal (8-2) as the Monarchs pushed the pace throughout the match. With the win, the Monarchs clinched a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Championships starting October 31 in Foley, Alabama.
The Monarchs goal came as Kennett sent a long ball into the box and found Morich who settled in and blasted one into the opposite corner of the net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 14:53 into the first half.
"This was a gutsy performance today. We started so, so strong and put them under early pressure and I thought we were deserved of our early goal. Carla took it so well," said ODU head coach Angie Hind."
"We defended well and together to really nullify their attack which wasn't easy as they have many talented players. I am so pleased with the performance and result today," she added.
In the second half, the Monarchs clamped down even more on defense holding Georgia State (7-5-5, 3-4-2) to just two shots as Erin Jones earned her fourth clean sheet of the season stopping two first half shots on goal.
Old Dominion closes out the regular season on Thursday night hosting Marshall at 7 p.m. inside the ODU Soccer Complex.
