NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team ventured to Richmond this past weekend to compete in the River City Tennis Open and came out with a strong performance, recording 16 wins in singles and seven in doubles over the three-day event.
Day one saw the Monarchs tangle with Virginia Tech and split the matches winning three singles and one doubles contest. Old Dominion had two rounds on Saturday starting with VCU and coming out with a sweep of doubles and taking four of the six singles contests. Later that day they faced Campbell in doubles with the Monarchs taking all three matches. The event ended with the Monarchs victorious in all six singles matches against William & Mary.
The doubles tandem of Codie van Schalkwyk and Jakob Cadonau went 3-0 on the weekend, while the duo of Nicola Vidal and Oliver Tobisch went 2-0. In singles, three Monarchs had a perfect weekend with van Schalkwyk, Tobisch and Cosme Rolland De Ravel winning all three matches.
"The first day against Virginia Tech wasn't good, we split the matches. But the players responded very well the next two days against VCU and W&M and we won all six in doubles and 10 out of 12 in singles," said ODU Associate Head Coach Othmane Lalami. "These are the expectations we have from them, and they are very excited to keep working, improving and getting results. We got what we needed from this tournament, and we're looking forward to regionals in 10 days."
ITA All-American Championships
Younes Lalami represented Old Dominion at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma and made quite a run before having to withdraw due to an injury last week.
Lalami went 4-0 in the pre-qualifying rounds scoring straight-set wins over opponents from Oral Roberts, Temple and Baylor along with a three-set win over Oregon. He then suffered an injury and had to retire in his opening qualifying round match.
"I am very proud of Younes winning four matches at the biggest fall tournament on the ITA calendar," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "He keeps finding his identity as a tennis player and it's starting to translate into big wins."
Old Dominion will next see action in the ITA Regionals, hosted by the University of Virginia on Oct. 19-24 in Charlottesville.
