NORFOLK, VA. – The No. 12 Old Dominion Field Hockey Team defeated Villanova 4-0 on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Aubrey Mytych scored two goals in the Monarchs win, making this her second straight game with multiple goals. Cam MacGillivray was strong in goal notching her second shutout of the year.

Old Dominion (7-2, 2-1) had two shots in the first period but couldn't find the back of the net. Just over three minutes into the second period the Monarchs struck first as Frederique Zandbergen and Rina Tsioles set up Marlon de Bruijne who blasted a penalty corner into the bottom of the goal. Fifty seconds later ODU scored to go up 2-0 as Mytych took a deflection from a penalty corner and slotted it away. Old Dominion went into the half leading 2-0 but trailed Villanova in shots (8-7) and penalty corners (5-4). MacGillivray had five of her eight saves in the second period to hold the Wildcats to no goals.

With just over eight minutes left in in the third period, Emily Tammaro dished a pass just in front of the goal to reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Sanci Molkenboer who slapped the ball into the goal. The Monarchs weren't done there as Tammaro aided Mytych to her second goal of the match, giving ODU a 4-0 advantage. Old Dominion would get four more shots off in the fourth period but couldn't convert.

The Monarchs outshot the Wildcats 16-10, while out shooting them 9-2 in the second half of the match.

"It was a solid win in an important conference game for us against a team that can be dangerous and has show the ability to beat good teams," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "Our defensive corner unit was strong and Cam was great in goal to keep a clean sheet. We were dangerous in attack and created plenty of good scoring chances. So pleased with the outcome, and now our challenge is to play more consistently well throughout the game. Everyone handled the schedule changes well to the games this weekend and we will turn focus to an exciting game against Duke on Tuesday."

Old Dominion will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. against Duke at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 2 but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian.
