NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion volleyball is back on its home court this Thursday and Friday as the Monarchs open Sun Belt conference play against Marshall. Both matches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts and Friday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
This week marks the fifth and sixth meetings in the all-time series between the former Conference USA rivals. The two programs first met during the spring 2021 season that saw the Thundering Herd earn 3-2 and 3-0 victories on March 21 and 22 in Norfolk, Virginia. ODU and Marshall then met again on Oct. 15-16 in Huntington, West Virginia last year as the sides split their contests. The Monarchs earned a five-set victory that Friday, but fell 3-2 on Saturday.
About ODU
The Monarchs (5-8, 0-0 SBC) went 2-2 last week. After a straight-set victory at Norfolk State on Sept. 13, the team made the trip to Richmond, Virginia last weekend for the VCU Invitational. Friday saw the Monarchs drop a pair of 3-1 decisions to North Carolina and UMBC, but ODU capped off the tournament with a 3-2 win against the host Rams.
Myah Conway secured her second All-Tournament Team selection in as many weeks. The sophomore from Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania posted team highs in kills (47), kills per set (3.62) and points (58.0) while hitting for a .267 average for the Invitational. Her other stats included two assists, three service aces, 25 digs and 15 blocks (one solo).
Through 13 matches this season, Conway leads the offense with 134 kills and is second in blocks with 41. Ashley Peroe and Tessa Mati follow with 80 and 78 kills, respectively. Setter Teresa Atilano owns 372 assists this season and has served a team-high 21 aces, good for 39th in the country. Jamie Bissmeyer leads ODU's back row with 167 digs, Anna Burkhardt and Atilano have combined for 165 digs, and Bailey Burgess is just ahead of Conway in blocks with 43.
ODU currently ranks second in the league in team service aces (86) and team total blocks (113) and is third in team total attacks (1,559). Atilano ranks 39th nationally and fourth in the conference in service aces.
About Marshall
The Thundering Herd (6-5, 0-0 SBC) was in South Carolina last weekend as Marshall earned a 3-0 win at Furman on Friday and added another 3-0 victory at USC Upstate on Saturday.
Macy McElhaney has scored 126 kills, Lydia Montague has 99 and Regan Tinkle is at 83 to pace the Herd offense. Brynn Brown is the primary setter with 334 assists , while Montague and McElheny lead Marshall's servers with a combined 25 aces. The Herd also has three players with over 100 digs: libero Kaitlyn Gehler has a team-best 172, Brown follows with 116 and McElhaney has recorded 102. Montague is the go-to option at the net with 53 blocks.
The Herd ranks second in the Sun Belt in digs per set (15.91) and third in team digs (684). Brown ranks second in the nation with three triple doubles this season while Montague leads the conference in total blocks and is second in blocks per set (1.26).
Marshall was picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll with 49 points.
