CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Marlon de Bruijne scored on a penalty corner off of assists from Frederique Zandbergen and Courtney Lynch with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to lift Old Dominion University field hockey to a 3-2 win at Boston College on Sunday afternoon.

Boston College (1-1) scored with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on a goal from Mia Garber to tie the score at two, but with the clock winding down in the quarter ODU was awarded a penalty corner and de Bruijne knocked in her second goal of the game.

"It was a very competitive game and we showed good mental toughness throughout," ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. "BC was physical and we handled that great. We used our speed and moved the ball really well at times."

Old Dominion (1-1) got on the board first after a scoreless first half, as Zandbergen knocked in her first goal of the season to give ODU a 1-0 lead.

De Bruijne scored eight minutes later to put the Monarchs on top 2-0 off of an assist from Zandbergen.

Down 2-0, BC cut its deficit when Victoria Arra scored with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Eagles tied the score at two on Garber's goal before de Bruijne notched the game-winner for ODU.

BC outshot ODU 15-11 but Cam MacGillivrary stood tall in goal making 11 saves.

"Our defense was tough and Cam was strong in goal, but the thing I'm most pleased with is how we stuck together even after we went up 2-0 and they tied it at 2-2," Griffiths said. "We stayed consistent and played with confidence and worked together and finished the game with a powerful penalty corner goal from Marlon. What a great way to finish off the game."

The Monarchs are back in action on Friday, Sept. 2 when they host James Madison at 11 a.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
