AUBURN, Ala. -- The Old Dominion women's soccer team opened their 2022 season on Thursday night falling 1-0 at Auburn.
"What a game. I think this was an incredibly competitive matchup," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind. "I asked my team to compete and to a person they did that the full 90 minutes. For a performance like this against top competition this early in the season, it certainly gives us a lot to build on."
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers broke through as Anna Haddock crossed in front of the goal and put one in the far corner for a 1-0 Auburn advantage in the 54th minute.
For a good portion of the second half, the Monarchs kept the pressure on the Tigers and held a decisive advantage in possession time. Auburn ended with a slight advantage in shots on goal with four to ODU's one as Erin Jones made three saves in her debut in goal.
"We took a little time to settle into the game, but I thought we grew as the match went on," Hind said. "In the second half we played further up the field and got better support to our front line, but wasn't able to carve a clear chance."
Old Dominion will return to action on August 25 visiting William & Mary for a 7 p.m. kick in Williamsburg.
