BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Jana Melichova of the Old Dominion women's golf team shot an even-par score of 72 on Sunday to claim a share of second place and the fifth runner-up finish of her career.
"We had some good play in spots and built positive momentum heading into the conference championship," head coach Mallory Kane said. "Admittedly, we were not prepared to play in the snow in the first round. We bounced back well in the second and final rounds. I'm proud of our fight and look forward to a strong week of practice."
Melichova canceled out two bogeys with a pair of birdies on Sunday, finishing the two-day event with a score of 219 (+3). Sunday's runner-up finish was the 15th top-10 of Melichova's career and her seventh of the season. The senior from Pikovice, Czech Republic was second in the field in par-3 scoring (-1) and tied for second with 40 pars.
Federica Torre carded a final-round 78 to finish tied for 16th at 228 (+12). Leah Onosato continued her bounce back from a first-round 85 with a 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 32nd at 236.
Elsie Verhoeven finished two strokes behind Onosato in 36th after shooting an 80 on Sunday. Pilar Muguruza (T46, 241) and Sarah Busey (T61, 253) rounded out the Monarchs in the play-six, count-four event.
ODU fired a 305 in the final round to finish tied for sixth at 51-over 915. The Monarchs were third-best on the Pfau Course's par-3 holes (+16) and carded the second-most pars (169).
No. 18-ranked Michigan shot the round of the day (290, +2) to maintain control of first place on the team leaderboard with a 54-hole total of 875. Wisconsin finished second 14 shots behind the Wolverines. No. 43 Purdue placed third.
No. 15 Ashley Lau of Michigan shot a 68 on Sunday for a three-round total of 8-under 208 and an 11-stroke margin of victory. Four golfers, including Melichova, finished tied for second.
The Monarchs contest the Conference USA Championship April 18-20 at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
