NORFOLK, Va. – Brock Gagliardi delivered an RBI double in the second inning and the Old Dominion University baseball pitching of Tommy Gertner, Brett Smith, Trey Fisher and Jason Hartline made it stand in a 1-0 win over Bryant Friday evening at the Bud Metheny Ballpark.
With two outs in the second inning, Matt Coutney lifted a double over the left fielder. Gagliardi followed with a double to left center to score Coutney and give Old Dominion (7-1) a 1-0 lead.
That was all the Monarchs needed as the pitching staff held Bryant to four singles on the day.
Gertner cruised through the first three innings and got the first two outs of the fourth before allowing back-to-back singles, the first two hits of the day he allowed. He came back with a strikeout of James Myler to end the threat.
Brett Smith came on to pitch a scoreless fifth but in the sixth allowed a one-out single and then after a strikeout, Trey Fisher entered and induced a Michael Stellato lineout to end the threat.
Jason Hartline came on in the seventh and did not allow a hit over three innings to slam the door and preserve the shutout.
ODU loaded the bases in the third and fifth innings but was not able to score either time.
Coutney was the only player in the game to have multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
The last time ODU won a game 1-0 was against William & Mary in 2013.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Bud Metheny Ballpark.
