ORLANDO, Fla. – The Old Dominion women's golf team sits in 16th place midway through the third round of the UCF Challenge at the par-72, 6,349-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. ODU carded an 8-over 296 in the second round before jumping into the third round in anticipation of inclement weather in the area on Tuesday.
"Today was a long day," head coach Mallory Kane said. "We didn't quite have the same game as we did yesterday. That's golf, and sometimes it's such a fine line between a few under and a few over. We will learn from today and be better tomorrow. This group knows how to stay focused."
Jana Melichova went under par yet again in the second round with a 3-under 69 – her 10th round at or under par this season. Starting on the third hole, she was 2-over after seven but caught fire on the back nine with three birdies. Melichova birdied the par-4 10th before adding two more on the 14th and 16th. The senior from Pikovice, Czech Republic closed with a flourish, carding birdies on her last two holes.
Melichova is 1-over in the third round through 10 holes. She is tied for ninth at 6-under for the tournament.
Federica Torre carded a 74 in the second round and is 2-over after 11 holes in the third. The senior from Ronco Scrivia, Italy is currently tied for 57th at 3-over.
Leah Onosato shot a 76 in the second round but bounced back to go 1-under through 14 holes in the third. She opened the third with 12 consecutive pars before a birdie on the par-3 17th.
Pilar Muguruza fired a 77 in the second round and is 3-over par after 12 holes in the third.
Sarah Busey turned in an 85 in the second round and stands 4-over after 13 holes in the third round.
Competing as an individual, Elsie Verhoeven shot a 76 in the second round and is 2 over with five holes left to play.
Sixth-ranked Wake Forest leads the field by 10 strokes after a tournament-low 269 in the second round. The Demon Deacons are 39-under. No. 34 Kentucky is in second at 29-under.
Carolina Lopez-Chacarra of Wake Forest tops the leaderboard at 16-under behind a 66 in the second round, which matches the low round of the tournament. She is currently 7-under in the third round with six to play. Kentucky's Jensen Castle is three strokes off the lead, and Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn rounds out the top-three at 10-under.
Third round action resumes tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m.
