DORADO, P.R. – Senior Gustav Fransson carded a 2-under-par score of 70 to lead the Old Dominion men's golf team in the first round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate. As a team, the Monarchs shot 290 (+2) at the par-72, 7,112-yard TPC Dorado Beach Sugarcane Course and sit in 10th place.
Fransson caught fire over his final eight holes for his fifth round under par this season. Starting the day on the back nine, he made the turn at 1-over but bounced back with four birdies and a bogey on the front nine. The senior from Umea, Sweden was 3-under on the course's par-5 holes on Sunday, matching the second-best mark among the field. Fransson was one of 30 players to go under par in the first round and is currently tied for 18th.
Rasmus Konradsson matched five birdies with five bogeys for an even-par round of 72, good for a share of 31st. Kazuki Yamauchi fired a 1-over 73 and is tied for 41st. Mason McCoy is tied for 63rd at 75, and Jakob Henriksson sits one stroke behind McCoy in a tie for 73rd.
Ball State (-14), UNCG (-13) and Wofford (-12) separated from the pack with blistering first rounds. Fourth-place Rutgers sits six shots behind the third-place Terriers.
Wofford's Harry Jones leads the individual competition after a 7-under 65, but five individuals are within two strokes of Jones.
