WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team took advantage of a good doubles start and winning every first set in singles as they defeated William and Mary 4-1 on Wednesday night at the McCormack-Nagelsen Center.
In doubles, the Monarchs won at number three with Francois Le Tallec and Codie van Schalkwyk taking a 6-2 win. After the Tribe won at number two, the top duo of Yevhen Sirous and Luca Maldoner pulled a 6-4 win to take the doubles point.
In singles, the Monarchs took a 2-1 lead as Oliver Nolan scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Pellerito at number six. The Tribe evened the match with a three-set win at number four singles, then van Schalkwyk put the Monarchs back up after a 7-6, 6-3 win at number five.
Maldoner followed that with a tough three-set win at number two over Harrison Brown 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 for the 4-1 ODU (4-3) win.
The Monarchs head to Lynchburg on Sunday to take on Liberty at noon.
MUELLER ON THE ROAD WIN OVER THE TRIBE
Our doubles is getting better. We put a lot of work into that last week and it paid off. Our guys did a great job carrying the momentum into singles winning all first sets. Winning both tie breakers was huge keeping the momentum on our side when W&M made a push. They are a tough team and winning on the road like that was a big step for our team.
