CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two fourth quarter Monarch goals within a 1:43 span lifted the No. 21 nationally ranked Old Dominion field hockey team (6-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) over No. 11 Virginia (6-3, 1-1 ACC) by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon at the University Hall Turf Field.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Marlon de Bruijne found Ilse Westera, who tied the match at 1-1.
Just 1:43 later, Meghan Smart played a pass off of a corner attempt to Marlee McClendon, who tapped it to Marlon de Bruijne, who fired a missile into the UVA cage, giving ODU the 2-1 lead. In the past two games, de Bruijne has scored four goals.
"It was a good game and Virginia plays a great fast and open style of hockey," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "I'm really proud of how we played, we worked hard and moved the ball well as a team. We played tough and showed some real character and tenacity to keep working and come back in the last quarter."
Virginia claimed a 1-0 lead 1:14 into the second quarter, after Amber Ezechiels tucked away a shot off a corner attempt for her third goal of the season.
For the game, the Cavaliers outshot ODU 12-7, while the Monarchs took two of the match's three corners.
Old Dominion goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray made five saves in the winning effort, while UVA's Tyler Kennedy was credited with four saves for the match.
"We grew into the game and were able to put some pressure on them later in the game that paid off," concluded Griffiths. "It's really hard to pick out individual performances, because there were a number of them today. But this is a good step for us, to follow up Friday's strong conference win with another good result today."
The Monarchs have now claimed victory in six of their last seven matches.
Old Dominion will return to action on Friday, October 1, when the Monarchs travel to Villanova for a 3 p.m. start. ODU will then host Richmond on Sunday, October 3 for a noon start at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
