NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 17 Old Dominion field hockey team (9-2, 3-1 BIG EAST) extended its win streak to five after taking down Georgetown (6-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) by a 2-0 score on Friday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
"From the very start, our goal was to come out strong, and we were on fire right away today," said ODU associate head coach Natalie Holder. "Obviously with 22 shots and only two goals, we would've liked to score more with those chances, but that is something we will work on. This was a big win, especially given it was a conference match and that Georgetown is a strong team."
Aubrey Mytych scored her first goal as a Monarch in the 14th minute off an assist from Ilse Westera to give ODU a 1-0 lead.
Old Dominion outshot the Hoyas in the first half 7-1.
Ilse Westera made it a 2-0 lead for ODU in the 41st minute after finishing an Evelyn Murray pass.
Cam MacGillivray made one save in the cage for Old Dominion, while Georgetown's Ciara Weets was credited with six saves.
The Monarchs dominated the shot count (22-3), as well as corner attempts (11-3). Old Dominion has now won nine of its last 10 matches.
ODU has outscored its opponents 18-6 throughout the five-match win streak and in its last 10 matches, the Monarchs have outscored their opponents 29-13.
Old Dominion will be right back in action on Sunday, October 10, when the Monarchs travel to Durham, North Carolina for a 12 p.m. match at No. 22 Duke, which will air on ACC Network Extra.
"Anytime we play an ACC opponent, it makes for a tough match. Duke is fast, physical and aggressive," concluded Holder. "Every time we play Duke, it's always a battle, but we will watch film to get prepared in hopes of going out there and performing the best that we can."
Duke takes on No. 9 North Carolina at 6 p.m. tonight in Chapel Hill.
