NORFOLK, Va. – Alix Marien of the Old Dominion field hockey team was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while teammate Cam MacGillivray garnered BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week laurels, league officials announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Marien put together the best game of her collegiate career, while leading Old Dominion over No. 14 Virginia, as the true freshman scored both goals in the Monarchs 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers. Marien struck first in the 33rd minute to tie the match 1-1. Then in the 49th minute, Marien scored the game-winner to lift the Monarchs over UVA for the second time this season. Her four goals and 11 points so far this season are third most on the team.
MacGillivray helped lead Old Dominion to two more victories last week, allowing just two goals in the two contests, highlighted by a 2-1 win over No. 14 Virginia. Against UVA, MacGillivray faced nine shots and five corners, while making three key saves. At Providence, MacGillivray faced 14 shots and six corners, as she made six saves with the Friars lone goal coming as time expired in regulation with the game already in hand. MacGillivray has now allowed just one goal or less in seven of ODU's matches this season.
No. 15 nationally ranked Old Dominion will welcome Temple to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Friday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m., before hosting William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
