DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 17 Old Dominion field hockey team (9-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) had its five-match win streak snapped at No. 22 Duke (5-8, 0-4 ACC) by a 5-1 score on Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

"It is a disappointing score line and outcome," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "We made a number of key mistakes that led directly to goals, and we also missed a lot of goal scoring opportunities, both in open play and on corners. The overall flow of play in the game and the midfield play was in our favor. We played much of the game how we wanted to, but we have to be more effective in both circles. We had 10 corners and did not score from any, so it's important for us to do better there. Duke showed us how to finish, they rebounded better than us and were just hungrier to score."

The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute after a Logan Clouser goal, which was assisted by MaryKate Neff.

Rina Tsioles answered right back after scoring on a quick restart to tie the match at 1-1 in the eighth minute. The goal was the first of Tsioles' career.

At the half, Old Dominion outshot Duke 10-6, while holding a 6-2 advantage for corners.

The Blue Devils converted a penalty corner in the 36th minute, as Hannah Miller finished a double assist from teammates Eva Nunnink and Lexi Davidson to give Duke a 2-1 lead.

One minute later, Miller scored her second goal of the quarter to extend Duke's lead to 3-1.

In the 40th minute, the Blue Devils scored their third goal of the quarter after Barb Civitella poked in a loose ball just in front of ODU's cage to take a 4-1 lead.

Duke added another goal in the 53rd minute, when Mary Harkins made it a 5-1 match off a corner and double assist from Neff and Davidson.

For the match, ODU held advantages for shots (15-13), as well as corners (10-4). Cam MacGillivray was credited with two saves in the cage for ODU.

Old Dominion has won nine of its last 11 matches.

The Monarchs will return to action on Friday, October 15, when ODU travels to Providence for a 2 p.m. BIG EAST match.

"This week will very much be focused on scoring and effort in the attacking circle, and tougher, tighter defending in our circle," concluded Griffiths.
