NORFOLK, Va. – An Alix Marien overtime goal lifted the No. 19 Old Dominion field hockey team (8-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) over Richmond (3-8, 3-1 A-10) by a 4-3 score on Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Monarchs have now won eight of their last nine contests.
Old Dominion had three different leads in which Richmond found a way to the tie the match, but just 1:49 into overtime, Marlon de Bruijne found Marien, who put away the game-winner for the Monarchs.
"This game was pretty good quality overall," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "I'm happy we found a way to win under difficult circumstances, as Richmond plays quality hockey. I think we can be a really good team for the remainder of the season. A lot of the games we have won this year have been close games, which is a good sign that we are finding ways to win."
Delphine Le Jeune started off the scoring as she finished a de Bruijne pass in the 14th minute to give ODU an early 1-0 lead.
The Spiders responded in the 22nd minute, when Alexandria Lavelle scored to tie the match at 1-1.
In the 28th minute, de Bruijne gave Old Dominion a 2-1 lead after an assist from Le Jeune. de Bruijne has scored six goals in ODU's last three matches.
At the half, the Monarchs held advantages for shots (7-5) and corners (6-3).
Richmond tied the match at 2-2 in the 33rd minute, when Steffie Bongers scored her team leading fifth goal of the season.
Le Jeune struck again to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead in the 45th minute, as de Bruijne again assisted on the goal.
The Spiders again tied the match, this time in the 54th minute after a Lindsey Frank goal, which forced overtime.
For the match, ODU held advantages for shots (22-13), as well as corners (12-7). Cam MacGillivray made five saves in the cage for the Monarchs.
Old Dominion will return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., when the Monarchs welcome Georgetown to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
