ODU celebrates a 7-0 victory over the Bobcats

NORFOLK, Va. – Six second half goals helped lift the No. 21 nationally ranked Old Dominion field hockey team (5-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) over Quinnipiac (0-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) by a 7-0 score on Friday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Monarchs have now claimed victory in five of their last six matches.

Four of ODU's six goals came in the fourth quarter, while Marlon de Bruijne went for a hat trick in the second half alone.

For the match, the Monarchs held advantages for shots (21-5) and penalty corners (9-2).

"In the first half, we were getting corners and shots, but only had one goal, so I thought we were playing well, but not well enough," explained ODU associate head coach Natalie Holder. "Give our team credit in the second half, we were firing on all cylinders. We showed that when we can play like that, we can play really well together. To get seven goals in a conference match is key for us."

Frederique Zandbergen started off the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving ODU a 1-0 lead at the half.

In the 36th minute, de Bruijne scored her first goal of the match to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.

Zandbergen scored her second goal of the game after finishing an Alix Marien pass to extend Old Dominion's lead to 3-0 in the 43rd minute.

Delphine Le Jeune fired a shot into the back of the Bobcats cage off a corner pass from teammate Meghan Smart in the 50th minute.

Just 81 seconds later in the 51st minute, Marien found de Bruijne, who put away her second goal of the contest.

Evelyn Murray scored her second goal of the season, making it a 6-0 lead for Old Dominion in the 53rd minute.

It was in the 59th minute that de Bruijne completed the hat trick off a pass from Ilse Westera, making it a 7-0 final in favor of the Monarchs. The goal was de Bruijne's sixth of the season, which leads the team.

Cam MacGillivray was credited with three saves in goal for Old Dominion and the shutout was the second of the season for MacGillivray and the ODU defense.

The Monarchs will next travel to Charlottesville for a showdown against No. 11 Virginia on Sunday, September 26 at University Hall Turf Field at 1 p.m., which will stream on ACC Network Extra.

"Virginia is a very good team and strong in all areas," Holder said. "We know that for us to be successful against them, we have to be playing our best. We will enjoy this win today, regroup, travel to Charlottesville tomorrow, get a strong practice in and make sure our focus is on UVA."
