STORRS, Conn. – The No. 19 nationally ranked Old Dominion field hockey team had its four-match win streak snapped in a 2-0 loss to No. 16 UConn in the BIG EAST Opener on Friday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The loss was the first for the Monarchs since the season opener on August 27.
"We were effective in a number of areas today, but we need to finish better," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "We missed an open goal, and we had a clear advantage in possessions in the attacking end, inside the attacking 25, but our finishing inside the circle needs to be much sharper. We also limited UConn to only one penalty corner, which is strong. We are about a third of the way through the season, and we are continuing to grow, so I expect us to learn from this and be smarter and more clinical in front of goal."
The Huskies claimed a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute after Claire Jandewerth scored off a penalty stroke.
Old Dominion attempted the only corner of the opening 30 minutes, while UConn took four of the first half's five total shots.
UConn made it 2-0 just 1:26 into the second half after McKenna Sergi found the back of the ODU cage.
For the match, the Monarchs held a 3-1 advantage for corners, but the Huskies outshot Old Dominion, 9-6. Cam MacGillivray was credited with four saves in goal for ODU.
ODU's Marlon de Bruijne led all players with four shots, as three of those were on goal.
The Monarchs (4-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) and the Huskies (3-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) have squared off in the BIG EAST Tournament final each of the past two seasons.
Old Dominion will be back in action on Friday, September 24, when the Monarchs welcome Quinnipiac to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. start. The match will be streamed on Monarch Media.
