NORFOLK, Va. - Nicole Fredricks (West Chester, Pa.), a junior on the Old Dominion field hockey team, was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.

With just 66 seconds remaining in regulation and the match tied against Longwood, Fredricks scored the game-winning goal in ODU's thrilling come from behind 2-1 victory, as the Monarchs scored two goals in the final three minutes of the match. Fredricks picked an opportune time to score her first goal of the season.

Fredricks then helped anchor the Monarchs defense to a 3-0 shutout win at VCU. Fredricks and the defense allowed just one goal in two games this past week. Old Dominion has now won four consecutive matches.

ODU will kick off play in the BIG EAST with a road match at No. 6 nationally ranked UConn on September 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Huskies are the nine-time reigning BIG EAST Tournament champions, and the two sides have squared off in the tournament final each of the past two seasons.
