NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 20 nationally ranked Old Dominion (3-1) field hockey team extended its win streak to three after scoring two goals in the final three minutes of the match to take down Longwood (2-2) by a 2-1 score on Friday night at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
With the match tied and just 66 seconds to play in regulation, Delphine Le Jeune fired a ball into Nicole Fredricks, who tapped it past the Longwood keeper to lift the Monarchs to a thrilling 2-1 come from behind victory.
Longwood struck first in the opening frame, when Ana Paula Lazaro scored in the 10th minute to give LU an 1-0 lead, which the Lancers took with them to halftime. At the half, Old Dominion held advantages for shots (5-1) and corners (3-0).
With just under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Jolene Ulichney finished a pass from Frederique Zandbergen to tie the match at 1-1.
"The second half was better for us, but we just didn't play our best game today," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "After we got our first goal, we kept the pressure up. We've been down in every game so far this season, so we got to turn that around and make it a little easier on ourselves. The good thing is we found a way to win a tight game even when we weren't playing well, which was good to see our mental toughness. Now we have to recover quickly and hope for a better performance on Sunday at VCU."
For the match, the Monarchs outshot the Lancers 11-5. LU's goalie, Madison Nuckols made five saves in the cage, while ODU's keeper Cam MacGillivray finished with two.
The Lancers defense entered Friday's match allowing just 1.0 goals per match.
Old Dominion will be back in action on Sunday, September 12, when the Monarchs travel to Richmond, Virginia for a 1 p.m. showdown against VCU. Sunday afternoon's match will stream on ESPN+. VCU was nationally ranked No. 23 in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches Preseason Poll, before ultimately falling out of the poll earlier this week. This preseason, VCU was selected to repeat as Atlantic 10 champions, while five Rams earned All-Atlantic 10 Preseason honors. VCU returns 10 of 11 starters from the spring season.
